According to reports, police and emergency services personnel responded to as many as 10 motorcycle, car and truck accidents on Saturday in north-central Florida -- that's 10 accidents on I-95 and U.S. Highway 1 alone. At least six bikers and motorists were injured, and one person was killed.

The flood of wrecks started as early as 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning, and traffic on I-95 in St. Johns and Duval counties was heavily backed up, sometimes to as far as the Flagler County line.

Seven motorcyclists involved in Saturday's ten north-central Florida motor vehicle wrecks

According to a spokesperson for St. Johns County Fire Rescue, the first incident was a motorcycle accident in which a biker was seriously injured and had to be airlifted to Shands Hospital in Jacksonville on a trauma alert. Few details about the wreck were available.

A serious two-motorcycle accident occurred around 11:00 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Racetrack Road near the Duval-St. Johns county line. According to a spokesperson with the Florida Highway Patrol, one of the motorcyclists was airlifted to Shands Jacksonville, but was pronounced dead. No further information was available about the other biker's condition or the cause of the fatal accident.

Just before 11:15 a.m., a motorcycle and a car crashed on I-95 near the International Golf Parkway exit in St. Johns County. Two people were injured in that accident, and both were taken to Shands Jacksonville.

Around 8:00 p.m., a hit-and-run truck accident nearly took the life of another motorcyclist. According to the St. Johns County Fire Rescue spokesman, a commercial truck driver ran over a motorcyclist, then left the scene. He was located by FHP troopers shortly afterward at a nearby truck stop.

Traffic chaos also included a multi-car accident, a car fire, and a pregnant woman in a rollover

At 12:40 p.m., FHP troopers and paramedics had to shut down the lanes of I-95 just north of Florida State Road 16 in St. Johns County after a three-car collision. Luckily, only one person was seriously injured enough to be taken to the hospital.

At around 3:00 p.m., a pregnant woman's car reported rolled over on I-95 just north of Florida State Road 207. She was transported to Flagler Hospital, fortunately with only minor injuries reported.

Shortly after the rollover accident, St. Johns County Fire Rescue responded to a report of another car accident in the same area -- just south of the State Road 207 exit from I-95. There they found a car "completely engulfed" in flames. No information was available to reporters about the cause of the car fire or whether anyone was injured.

This extraordinarily busy day of car, motorcycle and truck accidents is heartbreaking for all involved, and particularly for the loved ones of the motorcyclist who was killed. Please take care while driving.
