Man crashes into school after blacking out from brain injury

When people sustain a brain injury, even if they perceive it to be minor, it's important to get it checked out. It's also necessary to avoid getting behind the wheel if their driving skills are temporarily compromised.

A 27-year-old man who had apparently suffered a brain injury earlier in the day was involved in a single-car crash that took place around 11 p.m. one evening last week. The driver was traveling near Orange Avenue in Altamonte Springs when he blacked out. After driving through a fence near the playground, the vehicle crashed into Spring Lake Elementary School. Luckily, this happened during the evening when no students or faculty were in the building.

Lane-keeping technology aims to keep cars on the road

You may have heard of new technology in the last few years that allows motorists to have a little assistance from their cars while they parallel park. There's also new technology that aims to keep vehicles from drifting from lane-to-lane. It's hoped the improved technology can help prevent car accidents caused by drowsy drivers.

Ford is introducing what it calls "lane-keeping technology" as an option for its 2013 models of the Explorer and the Fusion. While it is not officially green-lit by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there are other companies that use similar technology.

Deputy injured after intersection collision

A recent car crash in Osceola County highlights the danger of driving through a flashing red light. When a driver fails to yield the right-of-way, the consequences can be quite serious.

A sheriff's deputy suffered serious injuries in a car accident involving three vehicles earlier this week. According to the Orlando Sentinel, a 61-year-old man was driving along Lakeside Drive near the intersection of Boggy Creek Road. He apparently drove his Kia sedan through a flashing red light.

$10.75 million settlement reached for man hit by sheriff's deputy

A 32-year-old man and his family may receive millions of dollars in a settlement relating to a car accident that left him with a brain injury and almost completely confined to a wheelchair.

The case has made headlines across the state due to the unusual circumstances. After nearly 14 years of fighting, the $10.75 million settlement agreement to cover the victim's life care was reached by his family with the sheriff's office, as well as its former insurer. The deal must still be signed off on by the Florida Legislature. The process began in the Senate earlier this month with a 37-2 vote, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

Daytona area beach patrol adopts smaller patrol vehicles

There are always ways to make Florida's beaches safer and prevent accidents. Beachgoers shouldn't have to worry about dangerous conditions caused by beach patrol vehicles.

The Volusia County Beach Patrol has started using utility task vehicles, and now Daytona Beach officials announced that they will soon replace the majority of its 20 large pickup trucks, instead using smaller utility task vehicles for most patrol functions. A few of the larger trucks will be maintained for specialized functions such as prisoner transport or towing vehicles.

Family of victim calls committee to prevent hazing a 'stunt'

As we reported last month, the victim of a hazing death at Florida A&M University has filed a lawsuit against the school. Now, the school is apparently forming a committee to help prevent hazing, but the victim's family is calling the move a publicity stunt.

A 26-year-old drum major died after suffering serious injury a football game last November, and his death was ruled a homicide. Trustees at the school voted 9-1 recently to form a blue ribbon committee to decide how to stop hazing with the school's famed marching band.

Child on life support after accidental shooting

The medical diagnosis appears grim for a 2-year-old girl who was shot on the premises of an Ocoee, Florida, home recently, but her family is refusing to give up hope.

The toddler was hospitalized after she was accidentally shot in the head by a cousin. The 21-year-old cousin was in the other room when his gun accidentally went off, he says. The bullet from the gun traveled through the wall and struck the girl in the head. This sent the family into a panicked rush to get her to a hospital in order to seek medical treatment.

Drivers' lives spared after bizarre truck accident

Two Florida truck drivers, including one from Orlando, are lucky to be alive after a bizarre accident that probably looked like a movie stunt to onlookers.

The truck accident occurred on Interstate 95 South last week. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a Fed Ex tractor trailer was traveling in the outside lane behind a man driving a car-carrier trailer.

Huge truck crash on I-95 leaves one dead, closes highway

It's not very often that a truck accident is so massive that nearby residents are jolted awake. But that's what happened this morning after a massive truck accident involving three tractor trailers and one car left a driver dead and several people injured.

The vehicles crashed at about 3:30 a.m. this morning on Interstate 95 in Volusia County, according to the Orlando Sentinel. The trucks involved in the crash include a logging truck, a U.S. Postal Service truck and a double-semi carrying a dangerous chemical, methyl bromide, which is a colorless and odorless gas.

Deputy sheriff riding motorcycle killed in Florida crash

A deputy sheriff was killed in a crash in Seminole County yesterday when his motorcycle collided with another vehicle. The car accident left the other driver in critical condition. The deputy was apparently going after a speeding vehicle at the time of the crash.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Maitland Boulevard and Gateway Drive, reports the Orlando Sentinel. The deputy was on his motorcycle, apparently trying to catch up with a speeding vehicle, and was headed west on Maitland Boulevard. Sources say it was not a high-speed chase, and the officer had his lights and siren activated.
